Identify the materials before doing anything
Find the material description and maker’s guidance before applying a cleaner or arranging an alteration. A piece that looks like ordinary metal jewellery may also contain resin, glass, an image or a chamber. Identify the whole construction, including any plating and hidden fittings.
Routine cleaning and storage
Routine care should suit every component. Store the piece so it does not rub against other jewellery and follow the maker’s instructions for cleaning. If you are unsure what a surface is made from, ask before using a treatment intended for a different material.
Damage or a loose fitting
A loose feature, bent fitting or damaged closure deserves assessment before further wear. Keep any detached parts safely together and contact the original maker where possible. Do not open a chamber or apply glue in the hope of making a temporary fix.
A ring that no longer fits
A ring that no longer fits needs a size and construction assessment. An ashes feature, fingerprint or inscription may affect the options. Ask about feasibility before alteration rather than assuming a standard resizing procedure will leave every memorial detail untouched.
Keep a care and design record
Keep the approved design, material information and care instructions with your records. Photographs of the original piece can also help an assessment. These details cannot guarantee repair, but they give a maker or specialist a more useful starting point than appearance alone.
Questions you might have
Can I follow ordinary jewellery cleaning advice?
Only where it is appropriate for every material in the piece. Follow the maker’s specific instructions rather than a universal cleaning recipe.
Who should assess damage to an ashes feature?
Contact the original maker where possible, since they know the construction. If unavailable, seek someone with relevant experience and provide the material records.
Can a keepsake ring always be resized?
No. Feasibility depends on the construction, materials and position of personal details. Obtain an assessment before making plans for an alteration.
