Photo jewellery for remembrance

A photograph can keep a familiar expression close. Before choosing a design, decide whether you want to carry the photograph itself or a likeness reproduced from it.

Different ways to keep a photograph

A locket encloses an image. Other pieces may apply an image to a surface or engrave a likeness into the material. These are not interchangeable results: colour, contrast and fine detail can appear differently. Ask to see examples of the exact method being proposed.

Choose your photograph

Choose a photograph for the person’s expression as well as its technical clarity. A favourite group image may contain a useful portrait, but cropping can leave less detail than expected. Keep the best-quality original available and avoid repeatedly saving a reduced screenshot if a larger source exists.

Cropping and source assessment

Ask the maker to assess the image before paying for a design. They can explain whether cropping, background removal or contrast changes are needed for their method. Enhancement cannot guarantee the recovery of detail that was never recorded, so agree any interpretation of unclear features.

Proof and protection requirements

Check the likeness, crop and orientation in the proof. Then ask how the finished image is protected and what cleaning or water exposure is appropriate. The care needed for an enclosed photograph may differ from an engraved surface or an image with a coating.

If the photo cannot reproduce well

If the photo does not translate well at jewellery scale, you can keep the photograph separately and choose another detail for the keepsake. A handwritten phrase, name or symbolic motif may offer a clearer design without forcing a precious image into an unsuitable format.

A FEW PRACTICAL ANSWERS

Questions you might have

Can someone be cropped from a group photo?

Sometimes, if the chosen person has enough detail in the original. Ask for an assessment before assuming a small face can be enlarged successfully.

Is an engraved portrait the same as a colour photo?

No. Engraving interprets the image through a surface treatment rather than reproducing it like a colour print. Review an example of the proposed method.

Can I use a phone photograph?

Potentially. A phone photo can be suitable if it has enough clarity and detail. Supply the original file where possible rather than a compressed screenshot.
