Cleaning and storing memorial jewellery

Good care begins with knowing what the keepsake contains. A cleaning method that suits the metal may be unsuitable for the memorial feature, coating or image beside it.

Separate lined compartments help prevent pieces rubbing together.

Check every material in the piece

Check the original description for the metal, finish and any resin, glass, stone or image. A compartment adds a closure to consider as well. Treat the piece as a complete assembly: identifying one familiar material does not establish that a treatment is suitable for all the others.

Use the maker’s cleaning guidance

Follow the maker’s instructions for products and methods. Do not assume silver dip, polishing compounds, steam or ultrasonic cleaning are appropriate. GIA notes that ultrasonic cleaning can damage some gemstones or loosen settings; mixed-material memorial jewellery needs its own compatibility check before treatment.

Water heat and everyday activities

Ask about immersion, cosmetics, heat and prolonged sunlight for your particular design. A metal description does not establish that the whole piece is waterproof. Plan a secure place to keep it during activities when removal is recommended, rather than leaving it loose near a sink or changing area.

Store to reduce scratches and tangles

Store the piece separately or protected from contact that could scratch or tangle it. Keep pairs together and secure small removable components. If you wear it only occasionally, check the fastening and visible condition before putting it on again, especially after a long period in storage.

If cleaning reveals a problem

Cloudiness, discolouration or a loose feature may need assessment rather than stronger cleaning. Stop if a treatment changes the surface or reveals damage. Contact the maker with photographs and the material details before trying another method; an improvised treatment can make later assessment more difficult.

A FEW PRACTICAL ANSWERS

Questions you might have

Can I shower while wearing my keepsake?

Follow the maker’s specific instructions. Do not infer that a whole keepsake is suitable for showering from the metal alone.

Can an ultrasonic cleaner be used?

Only if a qualified source confirms it is suitable for every component. Some stones, settings and other materials can be damaged by the process.

How should I store a piece I wear only occasionally?

Keep it protected from rubbing and tangling, following its material-specific instructions. Check fittings and condition before wearing it again.

What if it becomes cloudy or discoloured?

Ask the maker to assess the change before using stronger cleaners or polishing. The cause and suitable response depend on the material and finish.
